TRIGONELLA FOENUM-GRAECUM EXTRACT

Botanical Extracts

The extract is derived form the fenugreek seeds botanically known as Trigonella foenum-graecum belonging to family Leguminosae. The seeds were well known to the ancients, who used the herb as cattle fodder and employed the seeds medicinally. In India the young shoots of Trigonella foenum-graecum form a favorite vegetable. It is commonly used as an hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic. Trigonella foenum-graecum is also called Methi. The major phytoconstituents are Saponins. Fenugreek contains 28 percent of mucilage which occurs in the endosperm; it yields by hydrolysis the sugars mannose and galactose.

Scientific Evidence

Its effect as a oral hypoglycaemic has been evaluated. To evaluate the effects of fenugreek seeds on glycemic control and insulin resistance, in mild to moderate type 2 diabetes mellitus, a double blind placebo controlled study was performed. Twenty five newly diagnosed patients with type II diabetes (fasting glucose < 200 mg/dl) were randomly divided into two groups with one group receiving hydroalcoholic extract of fenugreek seeds and the other group receiving placebo with usual care (dietary control, exercise) for two months. Serum triglycerides decreased and HDL cholesterol increased significantly in group 1 as compared to group 2. It was demonstrated that adjunct use of fenugreek seeds improved glycemic control and decreased insulin resistance in mild type-2 diabetic patients.
