This extract is derived form the seed of Mucuna pruriens commonly known as Kawach. This widely available Indian herb is historically been used as an antiparkinsons. The seeds due to the presence of L-DOPA a neurotransmitter precursor is in great demand. It is one of the best known natural aphrodisiacs. Mucuna pruriens seeds are widely used for treating male sexual dysfunction in Unani Medicine. This widely available Indian herb is traditionally used in treatment of paralysis and other nervous disorders. The major phytoconstituents is L-Dopa.
Scientific Evidence
Clinical and preclinical studies shows that Mucuna pruriens has great importance in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Sixty patients with Parkinson's disease were treated with Mucuna pruriens in an open study for 12 weeks. Statistically significant reductions in Hoehn and Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale scores were seen from baseline to the end of 12-week treatment.
Mucuna pruriens was also found to stimulate testosterone-enanthate induced androgenic activity observed in a set of treated individuals. Studies also shows that the seeds of Mucuna pruriens were found to bring about a significant increase in the spermatozoa count and in the weights of body testes, seminal vesicles and prostrate of the treated albino rats.
