This extract is derived form the fruits of Momordica charantia of belonging to family Cucurbitaceae . The generic name "Momordica" comes from Latin meaning "to bite", referring to the jagged edges of the seed that appears as if the leaves have been bitten. The plant is universally known as 'Bitter Melon' or 'Karela' as all parts of the plant including the fruit tastes very bitter. This extensively available Indian herb is historically been used as an antidiabetic. In numerous studies at least three different groups of constituents in Bitter gourd have been clinically demonstrated hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering) or other actions of potential benefit in diabetes mellitus. The major group of phytoconstituents is Bitters.
Scientific Evidence
In clinical and preclinical studies, extracts of Momordica charantia fruit pulp, seed, and whole plant were tested for their hypoglycemic effects on normal and diabetic rat models. Studies revealed that Momordica charantia lowered fasting blood glucose levels in normal rats. A extract of the fruits significantly reduced blood glucose concentrations during a 50 g oral glucose tolerance test in the diabetics and after force-feeding in the rats. These results show that Momordica charantia improves glucose tolerance in diabetes. Effect of Momordica charantia, on fasting and post prandial serum glucose levels were studied in 100 cases of moderate non-insulin dependent diabetic subjects. Drinking of the aqueous homogenized suspension of the vegetable pulp of led to significant reduction of both fasting and post-prandial serum glucose levels. This hypoglycaemic action was observed in 86% cases. Scientific studies have also reported its use as stomachic and more
