The extract is derived form the leaves Gymnema sylvestre of belonging to family Asclepiadaceae. Gymnema has been used in India for the treatment of diabetes for over 2,000 years. The hypoglycemic (blood sugar-lowering) effect of gymnema leaves was first documented in the late 1920s. Gymnema sylvestre is also called gudmar-'destroyer of sugar'. The leaf powder stimulates the heart and the circulatory system, increases the secretion of urine, and activates the uterus. The major phytoconstituents are Gymnemic acid. Gurmarin, another constituent of the leaves and gymnemic acid have been shown to block sweet taste in humans. Some researchers have suggested gymnemic acid as one possible candidate responsible for antidiabetic activity.
Scientific Evidence
The leaf powder of Gymnema sylvestre and the alcoholic extract prepared from cause hypoglycaemia in experimental animals when administered orally or by injection. This effect is not due to any direct influence on the carbohydrate metabolism, but to indirect stimulation of insulin secretion by pancreas. No water-soluble or alcohol-soluble substance, which destroys glucose in vitro, has been identified in the leaves.
