The extract is derived from the fruits of Garcinia cambogia belonging to family Clusiaceae. Vilayti imli as it is commonly known, is an exotic fruit grown in south India, and the leaves of this creeper are used as one of the most potent agents to counteract diabetes and also benefited in the treatment of obesity. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, the flavors of Garcinia cambogia are said to activate digestion and are used as purgatives, in the treatment of worms and parasites, tumors and dysentery. The major phytoconstituent is Hydroxycitric acid. This principal acid has been found to suppress the fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, food intake, and promotes glycogenesis, gluconeogenesis and induced weight loss.
Scientific Evidence
The plant has been studied and tested in both laboratory as well as in clinical trials, and found to be safe and effective. Neither acute nor chronic toxicity is reported with regular consumption of Garcinia products as either food or tonics. Hydroxycitric acid, the active ingredient in the herbal compound Garcinia cambogia, competitively inhibits the enzyme adenosine triphosphate-citrate. As a citrate cleavage enzyme that may play an essential role in de novo lipogenesis inhibition, garcinia cambogia is claimed to lower body weight and reduce fat mass in humans. Garcinia cambogia was able to decrease the acidity and to increase the mucosal defence in the gastric areas, thereby justifying its use as an antiulcerogenic agent.
