ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS EXTRACT |
|
The extract is derived from roots of Shatavari, botanically known as Asparagus racemosus belonging to family Liliaceae. This Indian spinous under-shrub, with tuberous roots possesses a no. of valuable medicinal properties. It is believed that Shatavari taken during pregnancy can lead to the birth of a "super baby" in terms of physical and mental abilities. The Asparagus racemosus root is referred in Ayuvedic literature as galactogogue, appetizer, alterative, stomachic, tonic, aphrodisiac and is useful in tumours, inflammations, diseases of the eyes, throat complaints, leprosy, epilepsy, night blindness. Roots of Asparagus racemosus plant contain saponins viz. shatavarin I to IV along with kaemferol, asparagamine A etc.
Scientific Evidence
One of the well-known major therapeutic potential of Asparagus racemosus is its beneficial effect on the female reproductive system. Preclinical studies reveales that alcoholic extract of Asparagus racemosus exhibited anti-oxytocic activity. When studied in dose range of 20 µg to 500 µg/ml in various animal models like rat, guinea pig and rabbit uteri in vitro and in situ, it produced a specific blockade of syntocinon (oxytocin) induced contraction of uteri.
The roots of Asparagus racemosus when fed orally acted as immunomodulator against induced sepsis and peritonitis in rats and mice. Preclinical studies investigating the effect of Asparagus racemosus against the myelosuppressive effects of single and multiple doses of cyclophosphamide in mice shows that Asparagus racemosus prevented, to a significant degree, leucopenia produced by cyclophosphamide. Asparagus racemosus is a potent immunostimulant, with effects comparable to lithium and glucan. Well-established pharmacological properties of Asparagus racemosus include adaptogenic, antioxidant, antiallergic, immunostimulation, uterine relaxation, anticancer, antiulcer, antimicrobial and more
