Safed musli known to the research world as Asparagus adscendens traces its existence back in the oldest mountain ranges on the continent, the Aravalis from where it spread to the other sub-continents of India. The dried roots of safed musli are used in Unani medicine as an aphrodisiac which arouses sexual desire. This traditional use is scientifically proved.
Alcohol can affect hypothalamo pituitary-gonadal axis leading to impotence and sterility by various mechanisms of action. Experimental studies using Asparagus adscendens in alcohol exposed and normal rats showed beneficial effect of various degrees with respect to the sexual behavior of animals. There was also improvement in the number of LH-FSH- producing basophil cells in the pituitary and raised levels of circulating testosterone. The means sperm count was also higher in the drug treated animals.
