Hyperacidity results from a hyper-secretion of hydrochloric acid and pepsin normal components of the gastric secretions. This excessive secretion of acid challenges the gastrointestinal defenses, leading to a decrease in the protective forces of the mucosal layer of the stomach. This ultimately leads to various pathological changes in the body such as abdominal discomfort, including distension and gas formation. In the longer run the decrease in mucosal defenses of GIT (Gastro Intestinal Tract) makes the body more susceptible to harmful effects of hyperacidity. This ultimately results in severe damage of the inner lining of the stomach and a range of abnormalities from gastritis to ulcers, which may again lead to serious complications.
