Mustha botanically known as Cyperus rotundus belonging to family Cyperaceae possesses a no. of valuable medicinal properties. Some of which include astringent, diuretic, antiulcerogenic, antiinflammatory and stimulant properties.
Cyperus rotundus rhizome when given orally to rats 30min before ethanol showed an ulcer inhibitory effect in a dose dependent manner. Moreover the activity was also observed when the decoction was given subcutaneously suggesting that the herb possessed systemic effect on protecting the stomach gastric motility of the ethanol-treated rats. The protective action of Cyperus rotundus has been attributed to its inhibition of gastric motility and endogenous prostaglandins.
