Asparagus racemosus

Asparagus racemosus is a commonly found Indian herb attributed with a number of other therapeutic properties. The Asparagus racemosus root is referred in Ayuvedic literature as galactogogue, stomachic, tonic, aphrodisiac, astringent and is useful in tumours, inflammations, diseases of the eyes, throat complaints, and night blindness.

Antiulcer activity of Asparagus racemosus is clinically proven. Efficacy of Asparagus racemosus in 32 patients of proved duodenal ulcer disease was evaluated. Root powder was given for an average duration of six weeks. Shatavari relieved most of the symptoms in majority of the patients. It did not exhibit any antacid activity. The ulcer healing effect of the drug has been attributed to its direct healing effect probably via strengthening the mucosal resistance or cytoprotection.

Another clinical study involving the effect of Asparagus racemosus in duodenal ulcer (Parinamashula) was conducted. All the cases were ulcer positive or with duodenal bulb deformity. Group A (15 cases) was having hyperchlorhydria and hyperacidity and group B (5 cases) was having normal gastric acidity. All the patients were given Asparagus racemosus powder for one month. It was found effective in reducing total acids and free hydrochloric acid of gastric juice to significant level. It exhibited excellent response in 50 percent cases and good response in 30 percent cases of duodenal ulcer.
