Jaiphal ( Myristica fragrans ) a tree yielding aromatic fruits is very well known in the Indian subcontinent for various medical properties. Ancient ayurvedic literature has reported its usefulness as tonic for the heart and in brain and sexual and general debility.
A study was conducted on Swiss albino mice to see the chemopreventive action of Myristica fragrans . Cotton-tread impregnated with beewax containing MCA (methylcholanthrene) was induced inside the canal of the uterine cervix that results in the appearance of precancerous and cancerous lesions in the cervical epithelium. Mace of Myristica fragrans was administered orally at the dose of 10mg/mouse per day for 7days before and 90 days following carcinogen thread insertion. The decline in the incidence of carcinoma was highly significant.
In another study papillomagenesis in the skin of male Swiss albino mice was induced by DMBA. The animals were administered with diet containing 1% of mace during the periinitiational phase of tumorigensis, the skin papilloma incidence was reduced to 50%. The decline in papilloma significantly represents the chemoprotective property of Myristica fragrans.
