Emblica officinalis, an extensively valuable Indian fruit has been used as ingredient of various medicines from time immemorial. Shushrut, the great authority on Ayurveda, considers it the best of all acid fruits and most useful for health and in treating diseases. It is said that the ancient Sage Muni Chyawan rejuvenated himself in his late 70's and regained virility with its use.
A preclinical study was undertaken to assess the protective effect of total aqueous extract of Emblica officinalis in mice treated with Cyclophosphamide (CP). Mice were administered with the extract at a dose of 100mg/kg body weight for 10 days. The results suggested that Emblica officinalis may prove to be useful as a component of combination therapy in cancer patients under CP treatment regimen.
In another study aqueous extract of Emblica officinalis was found to be cytotoxic to L 929 cells in culture in a dose dependent manner. Concentration needed for 50% inhibition was found to be 16.5 microg/ml. Emblica officinalis extracts was found to reduce ascites and solid tumours in mice induced by DLA cells. Animals treated with 1.25 g/kg b.wt. of Emblica officinalis extract increased life span of tumour bearing animals (20%). Emblica officinalis extract was found to inhibit cell cycle regulating enzymes CDC 25 phosphatase in a dose dependent manner. The results suggest that antitumour activity of Emblica officinalis extract may partially be due to its interaction with cell cycle regulation.
