About Momordica charantia
Momordica charantia is grown in many parts of India for it edible fruits, which is among the most bitter of all the vegetables. The Latin name Mormodica mean "to bite", referring to the jagged edges of the leaves that appears as if the leaves have been bitten. The plant is universally known as 'Bitter Melon' or 'Karela' as all parts of the plant including the fruit tastes very bitter. Another interesting feature related to fruits of Bitter Melon is that the shape of fruit resembles the human pancreas indicating its effectiveness in management of healthy blood glucose levels. Bitter melon contains an array of biologically active plant chemicals including triterpenes, bitters and charantin.
